EDL 2017

We have celebrated European Day of Languages at Sudbury again.
It is important to celebrate this type of events to grow language awareness in your pupils. We, language teachers, have to take any opportunity to promote languages!

This year, we did some new projects. Year 6 have created their own designs to participate in the official EDL T-shirt contest, wish them good luck!

Year 5 have been discussing the importance of languages. They used the leaflet "Languages take you further" to learn some basic greetings in the European language of their choice.

In Year 4, we have participated in an International E-Twinning project where the children from each school had to create a poster with the word peace in their native language. Then, we recorded our pupils and share the videos on the E-Twinning portal.

Cartes de voeux - New year cards

This week Years 5 and 6 have finished off their cards for our French penpals in Paris and Gonneville.

Before writing our cards, we did some dictionary work and looked at some inspiring words for the year ahead. Do you know how to use a bilingual dictionary? What do these words mean in English?

We then wrote our messages in French and decorated our cards.
Ça nous hâte de recevoir les cartes de nos correspondants! We are looking forward to receiving our partners cards!

We have received these New Year cards from École Providence (Paris). They are all so beautiful! The children at Sudbury Primary are thrilled with their French cards :).

 

Visit from École Maurice Tollemer

Last Thursday our pen pals from Gonneville came to visit us at Sudbury Primary.

We have been writing letters and sending videos to École Maurice Tollemer since November so we were really looking forward to meet them!
In the morning, we held an Assembly where we showed them a presentation about London in English and a presentation about our school in French. We also performed a French poem about London landmarks.

Amarah and Isa showed them our British travelling box and explained why we included each of the items in the box.

The French children presented their Boîte Normande and talked about the gifts, food specialities and leaflets inside. In addition, they sang one song in English and one song in French.

After the assembly, the children played games and talked to each other in French and in English.
The Year 6s used their cocottes (chatterbox) to ask them questions in French.

In the meantime, some of the Year 6 children gave a tour of the school to our guests. The tour was in French and they used expressions like voici la salle sensorielle, ici on développe nos cinq sens.

We then had lunch together, the French pupils brought their own panier-repas (pack lunches) and we played together outside.

We wanted our French friends to experience British traditions, so we also had a cream tea with them (with Squash instead of the tea). They loved scones and shortbread!

It was such a fantastic experience! Lots of intercultural understanding, French and English speaking, fun and friendship between two schools from different countries.

Letters from Paris

This week Denim class and Azure class have received some letters from their pen-pals from École Providence B, Paris. They were all impressed of the amazing cards with the Paris landmarks and they were very interested in knowing their pen-pals and their hobbies.

Merci les CM2, nous avons vraiment aimé vos lettres!

Christmas cards

This week the pupils from Marine class in Year 6 have received these amazing cards from one of our French partner schools, École Maurice Tollemer. They loved the decoration on the cards and they were very excited of knowing more about their penpals.

We hope that Marine class' letters arrive soon to the children of CM1-CM2 at École Maurice Tollemer!

Clément Aplati

Our partner school École Maurice Tollemer in Gonneville (France) has sent us Clément aplati to take him to the main London landmarks.

International project: European Day of Languages postcards

As part of the European Day of Languages activities, Sudbury Primary School has participated in two international projects on the Etwinning platform. 

Pupils from all year groups have written down some beautiful cards talking about themselves, their hobbies and describing London landmarks and customs. We sent our cards to 31 schools across Europe!

The children are so excited, we have been receiving cards everyday! We have received cards from schools in Germany, Turkey, Romania, Poland, France, Spain, Lithuania, Latvia, Italy, Croatia, Portugal, Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Slovenia.

European Day of Languages

It's been a busy week at Sudbury Primary School! We have been celebrating the European Day of Languages!

The European Council established the European Day of Languages to highlight the important value of language learning. This day aims not just to support multilingualism, but also to promote, understand and spread the linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe.

In Sudbury, we learnt some facts and useful information from each country looking at this "Passport to the European Union". 

We also ordered the "Languages take you farther" leaflets. They show common expressions for each European Language and numbers 1 to 10. The children created some posters with words and sentences in the language of their choice.

Our younger pupils have learnt how to say hello in different languages. They have also been looking at flags from different countries.
